As someone passionate about science education, I find joy and meaning in sharing what I observe in the ocean. Sometimes what I see is incredibly beautiful. Other times what I notice is really devastating and sad. I think images and videos are a great way for people to have an experience that triggers them to think about what they observe.

Manta Rays Dancing

When fishing gear drifts away or is abandoned it is carried by the current and often ends up on a coral reef where it gets tangled all over corals.

Hawaii sea turtles spend more time in certain reefs than in other reefs. This video was collected with a little underwater drone.

The images below are from Oahu and Maui, two beautiful Hawaiian islands with diverse marine environments. In the summers of 2017, 2018, and 2019 I was working at the Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology and observed some coral bleaching in Kaneohe Bay; in 2019 it was extremely concerning. Bleached corals look white because they no longer have a symbiotic relationship with photosynthesizing dinoflagellates that provide them with food.
